Adrift Upon the River

A short comic about Cogita and Enamorus.

The first page of a comic about Cogita and Enamorus from Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Cogita is a young woman here. She is sitting at the base of a tree by a river in the Mirelands, writing in a journal. The text in her journal matches Old Verse 9 from the game. A few of her tears fall onto the page that she’s writing on. Along the river bank, there are several handmade memorials–small piles of stones decorated with various items. There is narration throughout the page which reads, “I often think about that fateful spring day, when I feared that I would be forced to choose between enduring loss or enduring loneliness.” A mysterious cloud suddenly appears along with a gust of wind that blows in from behind Cogita, pulling her away from her thoughts. The narration continues, “It was almost as if Arceus sensed my despair, and blessed me with a third option.”
The second page of a comic about Cogita and Enamorus. Enamorus appears behind Cogita in her Incarnate Forme. The two look at each other and smile. Their hands reach out for each other. The narration on this page reads, “And so, on that fateful spring day, I met you. A friend that would always arrive with the first spring breeze. A friend that could never be taken away by the passage of time.”
The third page of a comic about Cogita and Enamorus. Cogita, filled with wonder and excitement, flies through the sky on the back of Enamorus in her Therian Forme. There is a small compilation of little moments from their adventures together: Cogita finding her iconic hat, sharing a meal with Diantha’s ancestor in Kalos, visiting Celebi’s shrine in the Ilex Forest, and watching the sunset on an Alolan beach. The narration on this page reads, “A friend that would show me places that I never knew I needed to see. My dear friend, with you by my side, my fears can no longer eclipse my happiness.”

The narration continues, “I hope that you won’t be too sad when my bones are set upon the river.”

Back when I finished the game and collected all the old verses, I really liked the theory that Cogita was the author of the old verses. This comic is specifically based on Old Verse 9 (”I set the bones of Pokemon adrift upon the river...”)

When I first found that verse, I interpreted it as someone outliving their Pokemon partners and mourning those losses. I felt like this was fitting for Cogita since she doesn’t seem to have any Pokemon partners except for Enamorus.
