If everything goes according to plan, this afternoon I will have:
- a mortgage
- an apartment
It's hard to believe this is actually happening.
I've been a financial screw-up for most of my life, not helped by single parenthood and long stretches of disability-enforced downtime.
But I'm privileged to have family members with their shit together, who have helped me out with this.
And now I have a job I love, working with people I love, earning enough to service a mortgage.
Feeling blessed.
Also having twinges of guilt about feeling blessed when housing security is shit in Australia right now, and renters are being screwed.
I believe that everyone deserves secure, affordable housing.
I can't make it happen for everyone.
But I have a window of opportunity to make it happen for me, and I'm taking it.
@lookitmychicken I’m so glad you have that chance and you’re taking it!
@lookitmychicken I'm having guilt today about not being able to help everyone I know who needs it, right now, and having to take similar steps to take care of myself first. It stinks but it is the right move, to take care of yourself so that you can help others in what ways you can.
@lookitmychicken oh extremely same lol
@lookitmychicken we moved forward on this place in like october, and watching everything pop off just as we're moving into a house we own has been. A feeling
@lookitmychicken congratulations!!!
@lookitmychicken I'm so happy for you!
@lookitmychicken congratulations! Very happy to hear things are going so well
@lookitmychicken@blorbo.social Congratulations!
And I know it's hard to kick the reflexively ingrained habits of neoliberalism, but please go easy on yourself re. guilt. Everyone deserves secure housing and single home owner-occupiers are not the ones causing or contributing to housing insecurity.
Go hammer a nail into a wall with impunity and enjoy your new domain.
@alis I am tempted to make an art installation consisting of 200 nails hammered into a wall that I own
@lookitmychicken@blorbo.social Remember to paint it some ridiculous-yet-appealing-to-you color and/or colors, first!
(Also get a studfinder first and make sure you're not hammering into any cables or pipes... don't ask how I know...)
@alis I already have a wide range of impractical colors in mind. Going to live in the place for a few months first, try out some sample pots & see what they look like in different lighting conditions, then go bugfuck nuts
@lookitmychicken CONGRATULATIONS!! May it be the continuation of many more blessings!
