Hold My Chicken 🎉

I've been considering getting a Samsung phone when I eventually replace my Pixel 6 Pro.

I would've been happy to stay in the Google ecosystem forever, but they keep enshittifying faster and faster. I'm just about at the tipping point.

However, I often use the Live View feature in Google Maps when I'm walking to new places. I would miss it if I didn't have access to it any more. And it seems like most of my non-Pixel-having friends either don't have access to Live View, or don't know about it.

If you use a Samsung phone, can you tell me if Google Maps Live View is available to you??

I don't trust the documentation & also wouldn't trust most salespeople's answer to this question.

@lookitmychicken Note 20 Ultra, and idek what Live View is - I'm guessing it's not street view by a fancy name tho, lol. I also don't know how to figure out how to tell if I've got it 🤣 I make Google maps tell me directions on distraction-less map bc I can't tell east from west reliably.

@lookitmychicken is this live view?

idk about navigation though

should say i'm on samsung s24

@yesterdaychild
It's an augmented reality option that lets you point your camera at the things around you so that Google can work out where you are. Then it draws directional arrows on the live view to help you get where you're going.

(Can't take a screenshot of the directional arrows feature right now cos I'm at the cinema waiting for Furiosa to start)

@lookitmychicken I have an S20 FE, and it's greyed out for me (didn't know it was a feature because I'm used to OSM and paper maps)

@jade It looks like maybe it's greyed out if the area you're in hasn't been fully mapped by Google Street View ...?

@lookitmychicken after seeing this I checked central London and I can't get live view but I can get something called immersive view??

@goldgust I've heard of Immersive View, and I know it's not the same thing as Street View or Live View. But apart from that, I don't know anything about it.

@lookitmychicken I'm not sure! I'll check if street view is available for the area I was looking at

@lookitmychicken
from what i've seen, it depends?

like as far as i know, a google car came here just once (it made the news) and was the specifically for the goal of mapping things for street/live view and perhaps bettering the accuracy of streets/buildings

so depending if the place has lots of traffic, if it's in center town or tricky to navigate, there might be a street view of it

@skymeong huh, so maybe the Live View option is dependent on whether the area has been mapped on Street View ... ?

That might explain why some people using Samsung phones can use Live View, and others can't.

@skymeong PS my kid and I were visible on Google Street view for a few years, waiting at the pedestrian crossing near their primary school. We saw the Google Street View car go past and waved at it.

It was kinda neat.

(I just checked again, and it looks like Street View has updated its view of that pedestrian crossing since then.)

@skymeong Aha! "To use Live View, you must be in a well-lit outdoor area where the camera can recognize nearby buildings or street signs. And it must be somewhere with a mapped Street View, which Google stitches together with footage from its fleet of cars mounted with 360º cameras."

@lookitmychicken
that explains a lot!

good to know :3

@lookitmychicken it's an option for all the samsung phones I've had inc my current which is a galaxy z 5 flip. Should be on any phone with arcore

@lookitmychicken Google's fake VR thing 😁 there's a list of devices as a starting point here

I love my phone bc im a fucking sucker for a flip phone but I will say Samsung's VERYYYY guilty of bloatware lol

@minna I've never had a flip phone and don't really want one. But since you're a sucker for a flip phone ...😁

What is it about flip phones that you find appealing? I'm usually a sucker for a gimmick but less so with phones, so I guess it's not just the gimmick ... ?

@lookitmychicken i mean flip phones make me feel a bit like ive got a tricorder so it's not NOT the gimmick. but i also really like that the screen is inside, so it's got an amount of built in protection from scratches / keys / drops / accidental touches, & that it requires so much less vertical space in pockets. also like that it can prop itself up, which is great for video calls or half assedly watching things without having to have a stand, & having the little outside screen for lock screen functions is rly good for me for single handedly using spotify controls / alarms / etc bc i fumble my phone less when its palm sized

@lookitmychicken Yep .. I have a Samsung Fold 5 and it works for me.

@pixelcats would you recommend the Fold?

I'm thinking probably Galaxy S24+ for me but I'm not sure

@lookitmychicken Really happy with the Fold 5 generally, but it is a bit heavier and the battery life is ok but not great. The bigger screen is cool for ebooks and quick photo and video edits tho.

On balance I’ll probs go back to an s model next upgrade because I really loved my s22 ultra.

@pixelcats @lookitmychicken if i can jump in, i find the S24+ functionally not that much of a difference from the S24 (which i have)

@yesterdaychild @lookitmychicken Yeah my Mum has the s24 and it’s going well for her and they’re a great price eofy too
