anyone else feel like they get a sense of fight or flight when they see ppl describing themselves as a fandom elder?

unless you qualify for retirement benefits, i dont want to hear it

i think for me, there are too many people that wear this as a badge of entitlement to speak over others in an elitist way. why not just say you've been into something for X ammount of time? half the time, ppl using this title for themselves are like. lol 30. where's the octogenarians?!

@whimwitch absolutely … comes across as gatekeepy and anti-change to me. also last time i saw people referring to themselves that way it was a group of people who were mostly in their 20s so that didn’t exactly help haha

@whimwitch
I call myself a fandom old. Not because I've been into something specific for a particular amount of time. But I've been involved in various online fandoms since the late 90s.

I don't *think* I act like I'm entitled to speak over others, but maybe I do sometimes?? In which case, anyone who calls me out on it would be doing me a great service. 🫥

'Fandom elder' shouldn't be a self-bestowed title. It's something you could call someone else as a sign of respect, but it's a bit wanky.

@lookitmychicken i feel like elder connotates this idea of having earned respect or something like that. i agree, i think its not weird to refer to other that way, but being in your 30s and referring to yourself as an elder is just odd. i was mentioning to someone else that i feel like it reinforces the idea that you cant have fan interests past your early 20s. its like twink death but worse

@whimwitch self-proclaimed "fandom elders" that are in their 30s make me feel so weird lol at least double your current age before you start throwing elderly terms around...

@spillingdown i feel like it reinforces the idea that its strange or unusual to be participating in fandom past like. idk 25 or whatever kids these days think. there are many people much older than that interested and actively part of fan culture!

@whimwitch When I hear "fandom elder", I think of something very different than what a lot of folks use that term as a descriptor for themselves...

Because 30 is young! I know people joke about feeling old after a certain point, and media, society, etc act like 30 is ancient. But in reality it is still young.

@linky i know right! 30 is like most people's primes! thats when so many people actually feel like their lives are taking off! those should be ppls prime fandom years cause they dont have a lot of the same stresses a younger person would when establishing themselves as a human being

@whimwitch between "fandom mom" and "fandom elder," idk which one activates my instinct tbh

By current fandom metrics, I also technically qualify as a fandom elder and I'm 35. The only issue I have is that literally 9.95 times out of 10, it's always self-imposed! As if you need to have the same low self esteem that folks who call themselves BNF have, because people who I'd actually call "fandom elder" who are actually OLD...they never describe themselves as that. Wonder why? :ablobwink:

@whimwitch Like, I pretty much have the same opinion as @/lookitmychicken and the term "fandom old" is a much better descriptor, plus not as "arrogant" because well, it's just descriptive. And even then, there are people using it for early 30 yr olds and I scream.

Someone a few months told me 30 was the new middle aged point and if I tell you, the patience I needed to summon to teach them how that is Wrong :cwy:

@okilies oh god....fandom mom/dad/parent also kinda creeps me out. like i dont *want* you to be my mom! moms suck! (parents in general)

i would much rather be old than an elder. do not come to me for my wisdom, im just creaky 👴 (not actually 👴)
