anyone else feel like they get a sense of fight or flight when they see ppl describing themselves as a fandom elder?

unless you qualify for retirement benefits, i dont want to hear it

i think for me, there are too many people that wear this as a badge of entitlement to speak over others in an elitist way. why not just say you've been into something for X ammount of time? half the time, ppl using this title for themselves are like. lol 30. where's the octogenarians?!

@whimwitch
I call myself a fandom old. Not because I've been into something specific for a particular amount of time. But I've been involved in various online fandoms since the late 90s.

I don't *think* I act like I'm entitled to speak over others, but maybe I do sometimes?? In which case, anyone who calls me out on it would be doing me a great service. 🫥

'Fandom elder' shouldn't be a self-bestowed title. It's something you could call someone else as a sign of respect, but it's a bit wanky.

@lookitmychicken i feel like elder connotates this idea of having earned respect or something like that. i agree, i think its not weird to refer to other that way, but being in your 30s and referring to yourself as an elder is just odd. i was mentioning to someone else that i feel like it reinforces the idea that you cant have fan interests past your early 20s. its like twink death but worse
